Spanish Baroque Carved and Gilded Reverse Profile Mirror

An exceptional carved and gilded reverse profile Spanish Baroque mirror frame; the cove molding decorated with scale shaped punch work.
Southern Spain, circa 1650-1700

A reverse profile Spanish frame (meaning that the window opening is projected towards the viewer instead of remaining flush with the wall) are characteristic of the Southern part of Spain and dated to the second half of the 17th century. Their rich design was aimed to increase theatrical effects associated by the reflection of light over their surface. Several examples still remain in churches, museums and palaces in the city of Seville and are often attributed to carvers and sculptors working with the painters Bartolomé Esteban Murillo and Juan de Valdés Leal. The gilding remains in excellent condition with beautiful distressing, displaying the deep red gilder's clay underneath.

Mirror is antique and distressed (although not believed to be original).
